India Domestic Air Traffic grows 16.03% in June 2015
IndiGo market share at 38.43% and Air India market share at 15.29%
The Indian domestic air traffic was up 16.03% in June 2015 as per the data released by DGCA. The Indian domestic airline market saw 66.01 Lakhs (6.6 Million) air passengers traveling within India. With this the total domestic passengers flying with scheduled domestic airlines in the first half of 2015, from January to June, were 388.3 Lakhs (38.83 Million). The 2015 first half domestic air traffic grew 19.81% from 324.11 Lakhs (32.41 Million) in Jan-June 2014.

Air India again saw a drop in its market share which went down to 15.29% in June 2015 from 15.83% in May 2015. Air India carried 10.09 lakhs (1.01 Million) passengers during the month. Air India’s domestic passengers share although was up by 4.54% for 2015 first half period at 64.95 Lakhs (6.5 Million) passengers against, 62.13 Lakhs (6.21 Million) passengers for the first half of 2014. The domestic private carriers market had its market share increased to 84.71% during June 2015 with 55.92 Lakhs (5.6 Million) passengers flying with the nine private airline carriers.

A total of 25.37 Lakhs (2.54 Million) passenger flew with IndiGo which maintained its lead in the domestic air traffic market with 38.43% market share in June 2015. Jet Airways, the distant number two market player, increased its market share slightly to 18.35%, flying 12.11 Lakhs (1.21 Million) passengers. At third position was Air India with market share of 15.29%. Spice Jet also increased its market share to 12.12% at the fourth position and carried 8 Lakhs (0.8 Million) passengers. Similarly, GoAir flew 5.72 Lakhs (0.57 Million) passengers and increased its share to 8.67% at fifth position. The market share of top five players was little down to 92.85%. These top players collectively flew 61.29 Lakhs (6.13 Million) domestic air passengers.

The bottom five players in the Indian domestic air traffic market command just 7.15% market share. Jet Lite at sixth position flew 1.87 Lakhs passengers taking 2.83% market share, while Air Asia, being at 7th position, increased its market share to 1.91% flying 1.26 lakhs passengers. Vistara was at 8th position carrying 0.84 lakhs passengers with a market share of 1.27%. Air Costa was at 9th position having increased market share to 1% and carried 0.66 lakhs passengers. Air Pegasus, the new entrant in the domestic airlines market, was at 10th position and had carried 0.09 Lakhs passengers.

The competitive space of domestic airlines market in India looks even more concentrated at the top, lead by IndiGo. The top 4 market players cornered 91.56% market share while the top 5 had 94.90% share. IndiGo continued leading at the top with 45.37% market share. Jet Airways at second place had a market share of 21.66%. The third position was occupied by Spice Jet with 14.31% share while Go Air maintained its fourth position with 10.23% market share. Jet Lite with 3.34% share was at distant fifth player position. The rest 5.10% of the market was taken by Air Asia, Vistara, Air Costa and Air Pegasus respectively securing 2.25%, 1.50%, 1.18% and 0.16% market shares.
