India Airlines market share and domestic Air Traffic October 2015
Indian aviation industry recorded 18.8% rise in the domestic air traffic in October 2015 according to DGCA released figures. Most of the top five Indian airlines witnessed decreased market share while the bottom market players increased their market share. The Indian airlines market in October 2015 saw 7.04 Million (70.39 Lakhs) air passengers traveling with the scheduled domestic Indian airlines. The Indian domestic aviation industry grew by 19.96% registering 66.91 Million (660.60 Lakhs) of air traffic in terms of passengers carried during the 10 months period of January-October 2015, over the same period last year, Jan-Oct 2014.
Air India saw air passengers traffic of 1.09 Million (10.88 Lakhs) during October 2015, increased from than 1.06 Million (10.59 Lakhs) in September 2015. In spite of this Air India market share dropped to 15.46% in the current month. The domestic private airline carriers increased their market share to 84.54% carrying 6.0 Million (59.51 Lakhs) of air passengers traffic.
IndiGo increased its market share to 36.79% in October 2015 with the leading aviation industry airliner flying 2.6 Million (25.9 Lakhs) passengers. Jet Airways registered a decline in its market share even though with an increased air passengers traffic of 1.32 Million (13.23 Lakhs) passengers. Jet Airways market share was 18.8% in October 2015. Air India, the third leading airliner, carried 1.09 Million (10.88 Lakhs) passengers with 15.46% market share. Spice Jet’s market share increased to 12.77% with air traffic of 0.9 Million (8.99 Lakhs) passengers. GoAir airlines at fifth position carried 0.59 Million (5.94 Lakhs) passengers with its market share coming down to 8.44%.
Jet Lite flew 1.72 Lakhs passengers taking 2.44% market share at sixth position. Air Asia and Vistara occupying 7th and 8th market position respectively, saw more passengers boarding their flights resulting in an increased market share for both the airlines. Air Asia market share increased to 2.13% with 1.5 Lakhs passengers while Vistara market share rose to 1.75% carrying 1.23 Lakhs passengers. Air Costa was with fewer traffic carrying 0.58 Lakhs passengers dropping its market share to 0.82%. The bottom two airlines also managed to increase their market share while attracting more air traffic. Trujet market share was 0.33% at 10th position carrying 0.23 Lakhs passengers. Air Pegasus carried 0.19 Lakhs passengers at 11th position with a market share of 0.27%.
The competitive market space in the Indian domestic airlines industry remained concentrated at top while the top 5 airliners' market share decreased slightly to 92.3%. The top five players flew a total of 6.5 Million (64.94 Lakhs) passengers. The top 4 airliners maintained market share at 83.8% with increased air traffic of 5.9 Million (59 Lakhs). The bottom six players increased their market share to 7.7% of the Indian domestic air traffic market.
The competitive space among the private Indian airlines market saw traffic movement towards smaller players in October 2015. The top 5 airlines secured 93.7% market share while top 4 took 90.8% market share. IndiGo continued its lead at the top with 43.52% market share with Jet Airways at second place with 22.23% market share. Spice Jet at third position corners 15.11% share while Go Air maintained its fourth position with a decreased market share of 9.98%. Jet Lite also saw its share decline to 2.89% at distant fifth player position. The bottom five airlines increased their collective market share to 6.27% distributed among them as 2.52%, 2.07%, 0.97%, 0.39% and 0.32% market shares held by Air Asia, Vistara, Air Costa, Trujet and Air Pegasus respectively.
