Indian Automobile Industry News June 2014

The good news for automobiles sector in the month of June 2014 has been that the positive trends seen in May 2014 have continued, with Passenger Vehicles showing positive growth and narrowing decline in Commercial Vehicles. The first quarter April-June of FY 2014-15 ended with automobiles sales growth of 10.8%. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) released the automobiles figures. The month of June 2014 registered an overall growth of 12.1% in automobiles sales over the same month last year.

June saw the Three Wheelers segment growing by 23.2%. Within this segment, the Passenger Carriers saw a growth of 25.7% while the Goods Carriers grew by 12.4%, over June 2013. The Two Wheelers segment followed this with a growth of 13%, contributed by growth of 25.1%, 9.6% and 5.3% in Scooters, Motorcycles and Mopeds, respectively.

The Passenger Vehicles grew by 11.2% in June 2014 over June 2013. Except for the Vans which declined by 8.3% the other two sub-segments i.e. Passenger Cars and Utility Vehicles witnessed growth of 14.8% and 6.9% respectively. The overall Commercial Vehicles segment declined by 9%, with Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) declining by 2.1% and Light Commercial Vehicles by 12.5% in June 2014 over June 2013.

For the quarter April-June 2014, Passenger Vehicles sales grew by 1.30 percent in April-June 2014 over the previous quarter. Growth in Passenger Cars and Utility Vehicles was 2.2% and 3.9% respectively within the Passenger Vehicles segment, while Vans declined by 13.7%.

A decline of 16.1% was witnessed in the overall Commercial Vehicles segment in April-June 2014 as compared to April-June 2013, with a decline of 9.9% in Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) and a 19.2% decline in Light Commercial Vehicles.

Three and Two Wheelers sales grew by 11.6% and 13.7%, respectively, in April-June 2014 over April-June 2013. Within the Three Wheelers segment Passenger Carriers grew by 13.1% and Goods Carriers grew by 5.6% in April-June 2014 over the previous quarter. Within the Two Wheelers segment growth of 28.6%, 9.8% and 2.8% was witnessed in Scooters, Motorcycles and Mopeds respectively.

Exports in the month of June 2014 grew at 16.6% over June 2013, while for the quarter April-June 2014, the growth was higher at 20.2% over the previous quarter. Segment wise growth for the month of June 2014 was 22% in Passenger Vehicles, 21% in Commercial Vehicles and 20.6% in Two Wheelers. Three Wheelers segment declined by 8.7% for the month. For the period April-June 2014, exports rose by 6.9% for Passenger Vehicles, 20.9% for Commercial Vehicles and 29.5% for Two Wheelers while Three Wheelers exports declined by 6.6%, over April-June 2013.
